The Chrysler has ended up back in the shed. After a few glorious days of burbling around town the knocking from the back suspension got worse and worse until it started sounding deadly and the rear suspension bounced more than Uncle Buck's Mercury. At speed on the highway it threatens to bounce itself off the road. I knew the rear shocks were had it but this is something much worse. Pulled off the rear wheel and looked at the rear suspension links. So much damage. Every bit of rubber is completely shagged. Apparently this is such a common problem that you can simply buy a kit that replaces all the rubber parts (which is great news!) The bad news...one of the suspension link bolts will not come out because of course the factory assembled the rear sub-frame with the suspension in it and offered it up to the car, trapping two of the bolts. So...consensus is the rear subframe has to be dropped entirely out of the car to replace the bushes. Exhaust and prop shaft need to be dropped. Part of the filler neck is in the way. Apparently it can be done without disconnecting the brake calipers which is a small mercy but I've now had to buy another set of jack stands so the entire car will be off the ground while the subframe is carefully lowered enough to replace the bushes.
