Mark, There was only 8 of us. That's Dad holding his hat shaking hands with his mate. When we travelled Dad drove, Mum in the passengers seat, young brother Norm at her side. Older brother Geoff got to sit next to Dad, watching and learning how to drive, and also having the honor of using the dipper switch down next to the clutch pedal to dip the headlights at night. I was in the back with my 2 older sisters who each got a window, with me in the middle looking over the front seat, and over my young brothers head, to see what was going on. My younger sister eased the seating arrangements as she always liked to sleep up on the back parcel shelf....(after all it was 1957!!). Dad would leave from Syd on a Sat lunchtime to get to Melb by Sunday night. Unload and load on Monday and home by Wednesday. Thursday and Fri was unloading and loading, and servicing the truck. One trip a week. The road was a lot quieter then, especially at night because there wasn't any 24 hour servo's, you ate at Cafes in the towns or carried your own sandwiches and Thermos, with a canvas bag hanging from the front bumper bar for cool drinking water. All the kids went on trips with Dad during the school holidays and although the Cuzzo's had great wide bench seats they weren't the best. A Ford Fairlane Ranch Wagon won that prize. You could play a game of football in the back of one of those with the back seat folded down. If you wanted Dad to stop, easy, just beep the horn. The original Fairlanes were a BIG car, but I always thought the Compact Fairlane was a great Ford car. Anyway a couple of more photos from the Family Album. One of Dad bringing Jack Murray home from a Redex Trial, and a great example of how to load a truck with some Ford products. Hope you're enjoying the stories.
