In no particular order, the good ones: Morris 850 - I first drove one of these when I was 16 well before I joined BMC. After a diet of sensible cars like Holdens and Zephyrs, this was sheer fun and everything positive that has ever been written about them. Fiat 128. Fiat's first front wheel drive had just about everything you could want in a small car, except for its propensity to lose weight due to the dreaded tin-worm. Ford Escort. The first one I ever drove was a bog-standard model in the UK. The most delightful gear shift and a feeling that if this was an 1100, imagine what the GT would be like. Datsun 1600. Owned by a friend who lent it to me in Sydney, this must have been one of the best Datsuns they made, as its successors were never as good. Holden HZ Kingswood. I had driven plenty of the previous model, and when I was given this as a company car, it handled so much better than I thought any Holden had a right to. Austin 3 Litre. If you can ignore it's ungainly looks, this much maligned car was better than expected. I drove plenty of them when they were new - silky smooth, beautiful ride and good handling. I reacquainted myself with one of them in New Zealand 40 years later and it was just as good as I remember.
