I have vague recollections of Ford Australia producing the 1971 XY Ford Falcon 4WD Ute. Only about 400+ were built. Was this our first ?? https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LauD...
Yes morgul, the XY Falcon 4x4 was released a few years before the Overlander and was a genuine Ford Australia offering, originally developed in response to a tender from the Australian Army looking for a local replacement for its tough but underpowered British Land Rovers. Even though the Army rejected the high-riding Falcon ute for battlefield duties, Ford did sell a small batch (432) to the public to recoup its development costs. However, it was only available with six-cylinder and three-speed manual and did not have a super-strong perimeter frame (one of the main reasons the Army said no) or big Dana 60 rear like the Overlander, which combined with its 5.0L Holden V8 and TH400 auto was a superior vehicle in my view.
