Of these two toxic companies, the most directly toxic is Renault. Chrysler is more like a long term cancer.
Chrysler was pretty toxic, before long-term cancer set in. Just ask any enthusiast of the Rootes Group (Humber, Hillman, Sunbeam, Talbot and Singer) or Simca, and see what the reaction is. Chrysler had no understanding of the European or British market, thinking or culture and made a mess of those two companies within 15 years. Having said that, Billy Rootes pretty well destroyed the Talbot name in the 1930s when he took that brand over, and the same can be said of Bill Morris of Nuffield fame taking over Riley in 1938. You probably can't make too many names out of this family tree of those companies which eventually became British Leyland - there must be over 50 companies here, and only about 3 names have survived; Jaguar, MINI and MG. We all know the horror story of BL - I reckon they drew the blueprint on how to go under and look at the number of companies that are going down that path!
