BMC’s Austin 1800 Landcrab from 1964 doesn’t seem to have had the benefit of any kind of styling, even though they claimed Pininfarina had a hand in it. It has been described as having all the grace of a British Rail shunter, but there is a certain Bulldog look about it, particularly when done up for rallying. The grille was made of the same pressed stainless steel seen in the Sprite and A60 Cambridge among others. When it came round to Mark II time, a new grille and extended tail-lights transformed the car. The rear treatment gave it a real lift and eliminated the tail-down look. The Australians even went further and added a stainless steel strip along the length of the car, which gave it a finished look (last image). I know people who prefer the original, but I lean toward the Mark II. Verdict: Better.
