I would have to say I’m eclectic when it comes to car ownership, as you might conclude from this hand-picked selection – all of which I wish I still owned today. This isn't all of them, but they're the cars I found most interesting and memorable. My first car was a Suzuki LJ 50 4x4 with an oil-injected three-cylinder two-stroke engine, so you’d fill her up with oil and check the petrol at each service station stop. The Honda Coupe 7 was a sporty front-wheel driver with an intriguing motorcycle-style air-cooled transverse engine and other quirky engineering features that started an affection for old Hondas. The CJ-5 Jeep was a brilliant off-roader which I used to explore some Victorian high country with like-minded 4x4 friends. It was an Aussie-delivered example with numerous Falcon mechanicals. My XA Falcon GT Hardtop replica with 351 Clevo was used for club competition like lap dashes, hill-climbs etc. A great Aussie muscle machine that reminded me of Gossy’s ’73 Bathurst car - but I was no John Goss! The Merlyn Formula Ford was the only purpose-built racing car I’ve owned. Bought it for peanuts during a two-year working holiday in the UK in the mid-1980s. Fulfilled a boyhood dream of competing on famous tracks like Brands Hatch (seen here at Paddock Hill Bend), Silverstone, Donington etc. What a blast that was. My self-built Ford Capri fitted with a 302 Windsor V8 and BW four-speed single-rail gearbox. A real sleeper that could hose just about anything at the lights, but brakes were totally inadequate. Sold it to a guy who wrote it off soon after. Shame. My love of classic Mopars led me to a VF Valiant Hardtop in top-shelf 770 Regal trim with 318 V8 and Torqueflite console-shift auto. On a hot summer night with the pillarless side glass down it was the ultimate cruiser. Yeah, I know, another dumb sale. 1960 Chrysler New Yorker was my tribute to Virgil Exner. Magnificent LHD Mopar with 413 big block V8 and the epitome of space-age styling and features. Then kids came along and I also didn’t have anywhere to store such an enormous car, so she went to a good home through Shannons auctions. Imagine life without cars huh?
