When I was driving cabs in Sydney, I drove for the one guy who ran a six-cylinder LH Torana. There were two LHs on the ABC fleet; a 1900 and our 2850. They were bought by their owners because they thought smaller cars would be cheaper to run, especially the four. Not a bit of it! Apart from using so much fuel in lugging passengers about, the four didn't stand up to the job anyway. The car got a transplant with a 2850, and both of them did a stirling job. I think ours racked up about 200,000 kms before it was swapped for an ex-police XB Falcon because it was just too small inside for taxi work. The spare tyre placement rended the LH boot ineffectual and because I drove with the bench seat as far back as I could, rear seat passengers were squashed in. (No naughty business went on in that back seat...) From what I can remember, the XB was just as economical as the LH, even with room for one extra passenger. Slightly off subject, but I had an EJ in the early days and there was more room inside it than the similarly sized LH. Then I took over my parents' Austin 1800 and what a joy that was to drive home after 12 hours in the Torana or the Falcon.
