Another small example of form over function in the XA hardtop's design were the tail-lights, with lenses inclined at about a 45-degree angle inside rectangular bodies. They looked great but tended to accumulate road grime. That was particularly noticeable when driving on dirt roads, as they were soon covered in thick layers of dust which masked them very effectively. No doubt why Ford switched to more conventional vertical lenses in later models.
