Doc John I think the 403 would have beaten an FC at Bathurst. Top end, better braking and handling. JB007 could be right about the 4 cylinder working hard on Mountain Straight uphill climb, but may have shone with cornering and on Conrod straight. The model also did well in Rally events. A Floor Shift would have been nice though, instead of column, just sayin' ...... As for a road car, I'd probably prefer the FC purely because of it's simplicity, price, the ever reliable 6-pot and spare parts availability, etc., but the Peugeot would be a very nice ride. Dr.John nailed it with a suggestion for floor shift and twin carbs for an FC. I have driven one converted that way.
