I'm old enough to remember when Sydney taxis used a 'flag-fall' metering unit mounted on the dashboard, which would start logging the fare once the driver swung the 'flag' down. This also signalled to those outside that the approaching cab was not available because its flag had dropped out of view below the dashpad. It was a simple system but it seemed to work well for many years.
