SC, both Ampol and Mobilgas staged rallies in 1956, ‘57 and ‘58. Briefly, a 403 took the honours in the first Ampol, VW took all the honours in the rest including the first 6 placings in the ‘57 Mobil, the exception being Holden’s first win in an Australian rally or trial in the ‘58 Ampol. The Mobilgas of that year was notable in that it was the first appearance of the Japanese with Toyopets and Datsuns. The Mobilgas Economy runs were a totally different entity in that it was just that – to see how economical a car and its driver could be. Eric Lane took out a few first prizes driving such unlikey cars as big Wolseley 6/90s with 62.95 Ton mpg seen here in 1958, because it was on a weight formula. They ran these events through to about 1964, and then concentrated on individual makes over a set course. An example is BMC in 1968 with all automatics – Mini, 1100 and 1800, and I was involved in 1969 with the Morris 1500 and Nomad. Two drivers per car and an observer from the Victorian Police Car Club kept things above board. Note how there was a section for women drivers...
