The move toward diesel was definitely on in the early 1950s as petrol tax was being bumped up and avoidance became more worthwhile. Fiat released the 1400 Diesel in 1953 (at 1901cc and 40hp) but it too was a fairly leisurely affair and most went to taxi work.
