The first time I was at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway was not for a race. It was in late September 1989 and we were visiting friends in Indiana and they suggested we all go to the track which was holding a an auto swap meet. Vendors were set up around the track and for $5 you could drive around the track. So I did, in the rented Cadillac De Ville. A rare experience indeed to drive around Indy. What amazed me is how long and narrow Indy is. In the photo, check out the skid marks leading into the fence! I took it on the exit of turn four and looking down the main straight.
You must had a bigger budget than me, David - a friend an I circled the track in 1996 in a low rent Chevy Corsica. I had read all about Indianapolis since I was given this book when I was about 8. It covered every race from 1911 through to 1952. To go there was worth the mighty detour in our trip, and to cap it off was the Auburn Cord Duesenburg museum not far away.
