These are a couple of shots of my Buchanan Cobra as it is currently. I acquired the Cobra in 2004 and have campaigned it through the Victorian Racing Register ever since. This cobra is build number 3 of 7 built in 1958/59 as a turnkey car to take on the Bug Eye Sprite when it was first released. The popular story was that the Cobra was 13 pound heavier, 13 pounds dearer and 13 MPH slower than the Sprite , this was 39 reasons not to buy one and the rest is a sorrowful history. The original Cobra was based on Standard 10 mechanicals a cruciform chassis and a unique fiberglass body and was an attractive offering in its time. My Cobra is running a Triumph Herald/spitfire 1200 cc motor and a spitfire mk3 gearbox with a Standard 10 front and rear end with drum brakes. It would seem that my Cobra is the only one left and certainly the only one with a racing history. It is log booked as a group SA under 1500cc. It was previously raced by a Graham Rose for some time on N.S.W. circuits before coming to Melbourne in the 1990s and disappearing for years until I happened on it early in 1990. It took me a while for me to actually take possession of he car. It is my pride and joy and is now under a club Permit so that It gets out more often than before. I have competed at Phillip Island, Sandown, Winton, Bryant Park, Rob Roy, Mount Tarrengower, Eddington, and everywhere4 else that I have been able to The cobra and I still have a lot to do..
