Replacement speakers have arrived. One thing that is hard to convey is how smelly the old speakers were - they absolutely reek of stale cigarette smoke and the smell gets on your hands when you handle them. In the photo you can see pretty clearly where the foam surround is destroyed. It is possible to replace the foam surrounds (something I've done a few times on hi-fi speakers) but they stink so much and are of such poor quality there is no point. The new Kicker speakers fit perfectly. Rather stupidly I ordered some Aerpro speaker adaptors so I won't fit these until those show up. Mostly that is so I don't have to waste a pile of time cutting off the factory connectors and soldering stuff near the dashboard. I could use crimp connectors but I hate them. I figure now if you have thoroughly shampooed the carpet of an ex-smokers car, and deodorised the head lining and scrubbed all the surfaces and it still stinks like a smoker? Throw away all your speakers, especially the upwards facing ones like in the dashboard and back deck. edit: couldn't help myself, wired them in without the bespoke pigtails. Sounds...ok. I might replace the door bins next, they produce plenty of boom (as expected) but I think some more precise bass response is what I'm after, thinking about some Focal speakers there instead of the Boston ones although another set of Kickers seem like everything might have a similar tone.
