The German truck maker, Tempo made a series of VW powered front-wheel drive light trucks in the early 1950s and quite a few were sold out here. VW must have called a halt to supplying Tempo with engines because it would have been competition to their own Type 2 Transporter. Tempo turned to Austin in the UK who supplied both A- and B-Series engines as in the A35/Morris Minor 1000 and the Austin A55 Cambridge. Just before BMC went front drive with the Mini, Tempo turned their engines around which sat behind the gearbox. The Germans who made the Amphicar also turned to Britain with the Triumph Herald powering their boat-like car (or car-like boat).
