Funnily enough the engine isn't original to the vehicle - it's a 2009 motor (reading from the engine number). No idea what happened to the original. As near as I can tell, this motor broke the timing chain and bounced valves off the pistons. Bits of #2 and #4 were missing and you can clearly see kiss marks from the valves on the rest of the pistons. This is where it gets weird though: It looks for all the world like somebody popped the head, removed the busted pieces of piston, replaced the timing chain and then just buttoned it back up. At some point after that, #6 piston failed completely. Astonishingly the thing idled quite well and even the broken pistons at #2 and #4 showed great compression (obviously #6 had 0 compression). When it idled, it was sucking huge amounts of air through the oil cap and if you revved it up the amount of smoke was quite incredible. As I said I'm not a smart man and I bought it anyway. The bore was undamaged although #6 had a bent intake valve where it pretty clearly got a bit of piston between the valve seat and the valve. The damage was minimal to the seat (it polished out) so I just called it good in the end. Has great compression now. Next challenge is replacing all the front suspension rubber parts, the car failed it's NSW blue slip a couple of weeks ago as I hadn't even looked under there - the mechanic pointed out the giant chunks of missing rubber in the control arms and sent me away. RockAuto to the rescue again. edit: Didn't change the cam, probably should have but it's a VVT engine and didn't seem like swapping the cam was very straightforward. Depending on how long this lasts I might chase down a 6.4 go ham on that since somebody already did the hard work of making the "Eagle" engine run in this car.
