What a fast and demanding little circuit, JW. My fondest memory of Lakeside was the winner-take-all 35-lap final round of the 1981 ATCC between Dick Johnson's Tru-Blu Falcon and Brock's HDT Commodore. It was one of the best one-on-one contests ever seen. With the championship on the line, Johnson and Brock raced as hard as they knew that day; nose to tail, door-handle to door-handle, never giving an inch – yet there was not even a lick of paint swapped between them. Even Brock looked happy when it was all over, despite narrowly losing to Johnson. He knew he had given his absolute best without resorting to any dirty driving tactics and that the better man had won on the day – fair and square. I'll never forget it. Such a shame it wasn't televised in those days!
