This thread has been an interesting read - I have this conversation with my mate occasionally and we lament all the cars we practically gave away that are now worth money. But, this particular vehicle it isn't about the money, it's more the vibe of it. A 1982 Jeep Cherokee (Wagoneer in the US), 5.9 AMC V8, pretty simple 4 wheel drive system (not the fancy quadratrac). I think the reason I remember it so fondly is that when our first two girls were young we used to bomb around Sydney in that thing. I was working night shift at the time so could spend a chunk of the day with them. We called it Gaston the Truck because we were watching a lot of Disney DVDs at the time and the Gaston song from "Beauty and the Beast" kind of mirrored the excessive habits of Gaston the Truck. It was big, loud, attracted a lot of attention and so huge inside. When we got it the original carburettor was bad, so I imported an Edelbrock 4 barrel manifold and carb and had it converted. Good lord it made so much more noise, was no faster, but at least started when it was cold and didn't get the vapours when it was hot. It often broke down due to a particularly stupid reserve fuel tank that the last owner had fitted - we could never work out which way the switch would go to select reserve or main tank and the fuel fillers were identical and next to each other. It cost a couple of hundred dollars to fill it up so I never did. Occasionally both tanks were dry and we'd call the NRMA for a rescue. I owned it for about 15 years I guess, gave it away (well, sold it for a pittance) to a bloke who was going to restore it after I took it off the road after it failed rego because all the suspension was shot. I never heard what he did with it which makes me a little sad. It was such a fun part of our lives with those beautiful little girls bouncing around in the cavernous back seat singing their heads off and smearing icecream everywhere.
