This is a Buchanan Cobra, one of 7 built Nat Buchanan of Buchanan cars as a turnkey car in 1958/9. This is body number 3. Buchanan specialized in building sports car bodies for MGs Thiumphs and Holden based specials. They built around 180 bodies. The cobra was built as competition to the Austin Healy sprite. (bug eye) The story is apparently that the Cobra was 13 pound dearer, 13 pound heavier and 13 MPH slower than the Sprite. Probably doomed to failure at birth with Standard 10 mechanicals. This car was raced from about 1970 in NSW and was known as 'The Mobile Chicane' until it acquired a Triumph Spitfire 1200 motor and gearbox. Buchanan was experimenting with this combination late in the proceedings. I have recently restored my cobra and is is log booked as a Historic Race car in Group SA.
