John Bowe Kicks Off 2023 Season

By Shannons - 10 March 2023

After quite a lull in motorsport activities over the summer, things are now back to full noise, and I've had two events in two weeks. Incidentally, I'm unsure why we don't have motorsport events throughout summer when the weather is kinder, especially in the Southern states. Speedway does it, of course, and back in the day, the great Tasman and Rothmans Series were conducted over four weeks mid-summer. Go Figure.

My first hit out for the year was the Targa High Country, not my usual style but a terrific way to use my Porsche 3.4 Boxster S the way it was meant to be driven. We participated in the Targa Tour, which is the future of this type of road rally. Overall results are for serious rallyists in these Dutton-owned experiences, but several individuals within the Big Gig run the tours. My group was run by Unique Motoring Events, a Sydney company I've known for a long time.

My fellow rallyists were all car enthusiasts with cars ranging from Porsches, Lotus, late model Mustangs and Camaros to the much-missed Falcon GTF, a great group of people. The event, I must stress, is not competitive, with no timing, and speed limited to sensible levels, but exciting driving in a spirited way on Mt Buller roads and surrounds. Each night returning to our Mt Buller accommodation and a 5-star dinner prepared by the Unique Motoring events Chef. I liken it to cruising along the great rivers of the world. Everything is provided, and all you need do is turn up in your special car, or your everyday car, for that matter. We had an absolute ball that reminded me of my early days in Tasmania when the road rules were less restrictive. Look at the Unique Motoring Events website or reach out to me, and I'll introduce you to the relevant people.

I've just returned from our first Round of the Touring Car Master's series on my old home track of Symmons Plains in Tassie. As a little kid, I used to go there with my parents and collect cordial bottles to cash in, so it's come full circle for me, having one of the straights named in my honour.

These races were broadcast live on StanSport.

See you at the track,
JB
