The first ever 'choose your own' rare number plate auction in Australia will be staged by Shannons on Thursday 18 June from 7.00pm at the Classic Throttle Shop in North Sydney.
RTA General Manager of the Special Number Plates division Geoff Drummond said bidders at the auction would have the opportunity to buy a blank plate and choose their very own numeral-only combination, subject to availability.
"This is the perfect one-off opportunity for investors who are looking for a personal numeral-only combination that might otherwise never be available," Mr Drummond said.
"While personalised plates are available all year around, allowing motorists to choose a combination of numbers and letters, numeral only plates are extremely rare and only available at special auctions.
The myPlates division of the RTA will provide three blank plates for auction so bidders will have more than one opportunity to secure their dream plates.
The rare plate auction follows the launch of 22 new styles and colours available for personalised plates.
Another first at the auction will be the availability of one set of three-digit pink plates.
"The rare pink plates with the number 922 will be a valuable collector's item as the first numeral pink plates in NSW," Mr Drummond said.
"Not only are these the first pink plates in NSW but 25 per cent of the sale will go to the McGrath Foundation to help fund breast cancer care nurses and raise awareness in young women in NSW."
Also up for auction are 48 plates of rare three, four and five digit combinations, 12 of which will have no reserve.
"Past performance has shown that some limited edition number plates have increased in value by more than 75 per cent in 10 years, making them an outstanding collector's item and valuable asset to own
"Investors, collectors and new customers wishing to express themselves through their number plates are invited to attend this exciting auction," Mr Drummond said.
"Past auctions of rare plates in NSW have generated more than $2 million per auction."
Registration for the auction on-line or from 5.30pm on the evening at The Classic Throttle Shop. 50-64 Pacific Highway, North Sydney, is mandatory for bidders.
