Early bids target numberplates and big brands in Shannons Winter Auction

Strong bids have already been placed on classics number plates and prestige cars from major automotive brands like Rolls-Royce, Bentley, Ferrari and Porsche in Shannons current Timed Online Winter Auction that closes from 6pm tomorrow (August 22).

While three-digit New South Wales number plates were the big movers over the weekend, given their proven appreciation, the largest ‘plate’ bid so far is $385,000 for the early Victorian plate ‘347’, but with a projected selling range of $400,000-$500,00, more is expected in the auction’s remaining hours.

NSW Heritage Plate '262'

The next best bids to date are $361,000 for well-balanced three-digit NSW number plate ‘262’, followed by $351,000 on NSW ‘929’.

1969 Ford XW GT '351ci Cleveland' Sedan

The top vehicle bid at this stage is $145,000 placed on a restored 1969 Ford XW Falcon GT Automatic finished in the racing hero colour of ‘ Brambles Red’, while $90,000 has been offered for a restored 1970 Ford Mustang Mach 1( M-Code) coupe that is ultimately expected to sell for up to $110,000.

1968 Dodge Charger Coupe (LHD)

A good bid for another American Muscle Car, is the $70,000 offered for a mildly modified 1968 Dodge Charger Coupe, while $50,000 has been placed on an increasing rare to find 1966 Chrysler Valiant VC V8 sedan.

The best Holden Monaro bid is currently $52,000 for a 1972 HQ GTS ‘project’ coupe fitted with a 253-cid V8 engine and a three-speed Trimatic automatic transmission that requires finishing off, while for Monaro collectors after originality a 1968, two-owner, Ermine White 186-cid six cylinder and two-speed automatic-equipped base model coupe is in demand and has so far drawn a top bid of $50,000.

Amongst the other ‘projects’ in the auction, a 1972 Aston Martin DBS V8 in need of a restoration, has scored a top bid to date of $38,500, while $18,000 has been offered for a rakish 1955 MG TF 1500 ($22,000-$30,000) and $12,500 laid on a 1969 Mini Cooper S ($20,000-$30,000).

Other stand-out vehicle bids to date include:

  • $111,000 for a 1986 Commodore VL Group A SS Sedan;
  • $71,000 for a rare, restored 1958 Messerschmitt KR201 Roadster with a custom trailer;
  • $72,000 for VK SS Group A Tribute;
  • $63,000 for a Mustang ‘A-Code’ Fastback;
  • $60,000 for a 1973 Morgan Plus 8;
  • $54,000 for a 1966 Mustang convertible;
  • $47,500 for a stylish ‘no reserve’, 1959 Borgward Isabella coupe;
  • $30,000 for a 1967 Saab 96 V4.

Amongst the 52 two and three wheelers, the bidding is currently led by the $50,000 placed on a 1929 Indian 750cc and $46,000 for a 1948 Vincent Rapide Series B 1000cc.

1974 Ducati 750 Sport Motorcycle

The top bid so far of the 10 Ducatis offered by a Queensland collector is the $42,000 for a restored 1974 750 Sport.
