$550,000 Ferrari Dino tops remarkable Shannons Sydney Spring Auction

• 1972 Ferrari Dino 246GT exceeds high estimate

• 1964 restored VW Kombi sells for $97,000

• Early Harley-Davidsons in high demand

• Excellent 93 per cent clearance rate with total sales of $2.4 million

In 1972, it was the cheapest new Ferrari you could buy, but at Shannons Sydney Spring sale on November 13, it was the top-seller, comfortably accelerating through its guiding range to bring the hammer down at $550,000.

This UK-delivered 1972 Ferrari Dino 246GT that made its way to Australia in the 1970s sold well above its guiding range for $550,000.

The UK-delivered, factory right hand drive Ferrari made its way to Australia in the 1970s and had been in the hands of its current Australian enthusiast owner for the past 20 years.

Offered in strong mechanical condition, with less than 1,000 miles reportedly covered since its mid-mounted V6 engine, gearbox and suspension were rebuilt, bidding opened at $360,000 before selling to a Ferrari enthusiast in Shannons Sydney auction room.

This 1971 Jaguar E-Type 4.2 Series 2 Roadster with a rare factory hardtop, sold beyond pre-sale expectations for $175,000.

Other ‘World market’ classics were also in demand, with a 1971 Jaguar E-Type 4.2 Series 2 Roadster, nicely presented in red, with parchment leather trim, chrome wire wheels and a rare factory hardtop, comfortably exceeding its high estimate to sell for $175,000.

This stunning, restored, right hand drive 1964 Volkswagen Kombi ‘Split Window Microbus sold after a protracted floor and internet bidding duel for $97,000.

Meanwhile, an Australian-delivered 1951 Jaguar XK120 roadster in excellent driveable condition brought $125,000, a fully-restored, right hand drive 1964 Volkswagen Kombi ‘Split Window Microbus in stunning condition sold after a protracted floor and internet bidding duel for $97,000 and a locally-delivered 1986 Mercedes-Benz 560SL Convertible with both folding soft and hardtops, brought $77,000.

Australian-built vehicles did very well, topped by a 1968 Holden HK GTS 327 ‘Bathurst’ Monaro Coupe that sold for $155,000, while a 1970 Ford XW Falcon GT with the optional three-speed automatic transmission brought $121,000.

This 1991 VN Commodore SV5000 sedan in excellent condition and offered with ‘no reserve' sold for $52,500.

This nicely restored circa-1925 Model JD 1200cc with sidecar sold well above its high estimate for $42,500.

Amongst the seven motorcycles on offer, early Harley-Davidsons were in high demand, with a nicely restored circa-1925 Model JD 1200cc with sidecar selling well above its high estimate for $42,500 and a circa-1921 Model J 1000cc in wonderful condition bringing $37,500.

The third Harley in the auction, a restored and stylish red and white 1942 WLA 750cc solo, sold on estimate after the hammer.

Japanese sporting motorcycles were also sought-after, with a 1972 Kawasaki H2 Mach IV 750cc selling for $23,000 and a 1980 Suzuki GS1000ST bringing $13,000.

Both were nearly outsold by a 1961 Italian Vespa GS 150cc scooter, which made $9,500 when offered with ‘no reserve’.

In other vehicle sale highlights:

• Two desirable Austin-Healeys brought good prices – a fabulous, Australian-delivered 1954 100/4 BN1 Roadster sold for $72,000 and a 1964 six-cylinder 3000 BJ8 Mk3 Phase II  offered at ‘no reserve’ went for $65,000;

• A ‘tourist delivery’ 1976 Porsche 911 2.7 Targa Sportomatic sold for $57,000;

• Two earlier Holdens, both offered with ‘no reserve’ –  a beautifully-restored 1967 HR Panel Van and a restored 1964 EH Station Wagon equipped with many period extras – sold for $25,000 and $23,500 respectively;

1970 Ford Fairlane ZD 351 ‘K Code’ sedan offered with ‘no reserve’ brought $26,000;

• A 1974 Leyland P76 Executive Sedan also sold with ‘no reserve’ for $13,000.

• Also impressive amongst the memorabilia was the $7,000 paid for a restored and rarely-seen 1949 Austin Pathfinder pedal car.
