The US Army has announced that Wisconsin-based defence vehicle supplier Oshkosh has won the contract to supply the long-awaited replacement for the Humvee from 2016. This monster, called the JLTV (Joint Light Tactical Vehicle), is designed primarily to eliminate the flat-floored, low-riding Humvee's greatest weakness in battle - its inability to protect occupants from the deadly blasts of roadside bombs. The JLTV's V-shaped hull is designed to better deflect these explosions, along with numerous parts designed to dissipate blast forces by fragmenting and flying off the vehicle. The size of the bulletproof windows have been minimised too. Powered by a hulking 6.6 litre diesel engine, the JLTV will be available in a variety of body styles and is claimed to be 70 percent faster than any other military vehicle over tough terrain. It's also light enough to be carried by a CH-47 Chinook helicopter. It will be interesting to see if Oshkosh offers a civilian version some day - no doubt Arnie will be first in the queue! They should have manufactured the Australian Bushmaster under licence. Especially now with the devalued dollar it would have been better and cheaper. Mind you, after the second world war, Tucker made a vehicle for them that went 100 mph and they reused it as they didn't believe that they needed such a fast machine. How times have changed.
