History
*Not the actual photo of mine. I am still searching for a photo.
Bought a VW shell, baja kit and old 1200 motor for $500.
Took a little over a year (with no carport) to build. Learnt a lot on the way.
Custom wheels made from old VW rims widened to take big off road tires.
Original engine was replaced with a 1500 which also didn't run so managed to get a 1600cc.
Had a stinger exhaust but this would not pass a roadworthy so replaced with a custom job above the engine.
Waterproofed the engine, tunnel and added new door seals. The aim was to make it good for water crossings. slow rivers etc (not salt water).
This was the most fun car I have had. Drive it anywhere. Best on sand dunes. Once i was followed by a pushy 4X4 right up my clacker. SO half way up a big dune i stopped. Then drove on. He got bogged.
This was also the most unsafe car. Fast, but could not go beyond 110 kph as it started to float about and drift. Down a hill in the wet the brakes and steering wheel were not much use. The handbrake was more effective.
At one time i drove the car with three wheels, another time with no electrics, another time no brakes. The car had no rear seat belts so I took the rear seats out. The car was very light.
Heaps of fun.
Modifications
Pretty much everything. electrics, panels, engine, wheels, cut the floor pan as per Baja. Doors, seats, windows and roof were still original.
12 volt power with 6 volt starter motor, wipers etc.
