History
Designed by Albrecht Grag Von Goertz, the Nissan Silvia was one of Nissan and Japan for that matter, early sports car attempts. Starting in May 1963 as a concept the Silvia evolved into its completed form in September 1964 at the 11th Tokyo Motor Show along side the Fairlady 1500. Interestingly, Yamaha was commissioned to build the prototype for the show by Nissan. After further design changes and an upgrade to the R16 engine and a all-syncro gearbox the production vehicle was released for sale on March 18th, 1965. 554 Silvias where built and of the 59 vehicles exported 49 of those arrived in Australia and this is one of them. In 1966 the Silvia sold for $4,390. Due to its low numbers, manufacturing required a greater amount of its construction and build by hand, quite unique. One interesting fact about the Silvia was its use by the Police in Tokyo where the car was rebadged as a "Silvia Patrol" rather than a "Nissan Silvia" and way back them the dashboard was remoulded to house a police radio and "Speed Measuring Devices" wow...There are very few examples of this fine car left in the world, especially in Australia. I just loved driving the Silvia it handled like it was on rails, and the looks it received was overwhelming. Hope you enjoyed the history lesson on this fine Japanese car.
