Hi,
My first car, Mums Renault 750, in which I got my licence at Cronulla Police station, which as the accompanying photo shows opened up all the opportunities a teenager wanted, freedom to access sun, surf and sand between the toes. I had the latest in borrowed roofracks and painted the outside of the 15 inch rims red to contrast with the faded blue paint on the car, the hubcaps and dress rims polished up to look like chrome. It handled pretty well as we used to return from surf trips from Wollongong via Lady Carringtons drive through the National Park, the swing axle rear end living up to its name in enthusiastic moments, luckily, the down force of surfboards on the roof saved the day,ha ha.
Only weak spot, the fuel tank filler was under the louvred rear hatch with the radiator filler outside above it and you had to watch for errant bowser attendants keen to add petrol to the water.
Fifty plus years on,I have a 1/43rd scale model in French Blue as a reminder of that carefree period.Unfortunately, that was all to change
