History
This was a fantastic car, it was both economical and very fast for a 4.2 standard Holden V8 with 3 speed Trimatic automatic and 2.78 ratio dif. I purchased this GTS in late 1977 after a short and disappointing “performance” experience with a 6 cylinder HJ Sandman. I really missed a V8 and found the ‘windowlesspanel van’ lacked good rear vision and as a result was not enjoyable to drive in heavy city traffic. This GTS was a lot of fun. The HJ V8s all had upspec compression ratios compared to earlier Holden V8s, they had improved cam profile and different timing and were a little faster than the HT/G/Q models. Interestingly there were only 5,517 HJ GTSs produced between Oct 74 and June 76. Of these 4,574 were GTS 4 door sedans, 606 GTS Coupes and a mere 337 LS Coupes. Unfortunately due to the petrol scares of 1980 where Australians had to ration petrol purchasing on odds and evens days consistent with the last numeral of their registration number, I made the error in trading it in for a new Datsun. Damn stupid decision. Loved this silver mist HJ GTS sedan.
