History
I purchased this July 1971 built HQ GTS Coupe in 1976. It was a first model HQ with no headrests from the factory, albeit they were dealer retrofitted at the time I purchased it. When purchased from the Holden dealer in Stawell in central Victoria it was an original 253 Trimatic in excellent condition. The Coupe went extremely well but a local well tuned 4 speed V6 GT Capri could always better it by 30 metres over a 0.8 kilometre straight. Hence the first upgrade was an M21 4 speed behind the still standard 253. Well the Capri owner did not know of this modification and we once again tested them over the straight and to my delight I was able to beat him by over 100 metres. He thought I had upgraded to a 308. Well the engine did get upgraded to a genuine roller rocker, performance lumpy cam upspeced L34 Torana motor that could absolutely scream. Great car, faster than any semi stock 350 and faster than most HOs.
Lots of fun and lots of stories. The HQ GTS Coupe one of the most beautiful Australian Motor cars ever designed.
Modifications
Upgraded from Trimatic to M21 4 speed. 253 replaced with very warm L34 Torana 308.
