History
This is one of two Mini Marcos shells imported to Australia in 1967 by Competition Cars Australia (Sydney). This shell was then purchased, built up and registered for the road by Jack Read of Read Speed in Brisbane it bore the plates MARCOS for many years until the car was damaged by a ute reversing into the A-pillar and driver's door. Procuring a replacement windscreen proved problematic, so the Marcos was pushed under Jack's house and periodically pilfered for parts for other projects.
When Jack passed away, his son, Matt stripped it of most remaining parts, but ill-health prevented him undertaking a restoration. The current owner purchased the rolling shell from Matt and then undertook a two-year restoration project. It is one of five known Mini Marcos cars in Australia.
Modifications
Because the Mini Marcos is a kit car from the 1960s, owners could build the car to their own specifications. This Mini Marcos is based on a Mini Cooper S from the same era. The engine is 1310cc with a side-draft Weber Carburettor and the usual Cooper S performance enhancements. Gearbox and brakes are also Cooper S and the wheels 12" x 5" Rose Petals shod with R-series Yokahama tyres.
It has competed at the Geelong Revival Sprints for the last five years and recorded consistent 15.6 second standing quarter mile times.
