History
Purchased from General Motors Holden in 1976 when having just completed my mechanical apprenticeship at Holdens Lang Lang Proving Ground for $3,600. Being basically a standard SLR5000 with roll cage, extra instruments and HDT paintwork it served as a HDT promotional vehicle for a few years before being replaced by the LX Torana Hatchback HDT variant. Joining the Torana Car Club it was used in club sprint races at Phillip Island, Winton, Sandown, Calder and Moe Hill Climb. Peter Brock was at the Proving Ground prior to the first sprint meeting and asking him the big question, how should I go about it? He’s reply, pump the tyres up to 40psi and go for it and that's exactly what i did and went on to take out many class and outright wins and then drove it home.... (Not to know that 15 years on I would be racing against PB in the 1992 Bathurst 12Hr driving the Holden Akubra Ute with Allan Grice and Brad Jones)
Selling the Torana to a young lad from Dandenong in 1980 he resprayed it blue and I never saw it again.. Happy Days!!
