History
Always wanted an Xtra Cab 80s 4x4 Hilux. Saw it in back to the future and decided I wanted one. Thinking this was an original thought in Australia I started my project. Since then I have found a couple dozen others all doing to some degree over the country. Often referred to as a Flylux or McFlylux.
Car is a 1987 though, not the 85 like the movie. Still has the solid axle at least. Will be a bit different to the movie car though as I am going for a 3L turbo diesel over the 22RE and will be Right Hand Drive.
This car came from NSW. Picked up Australia day weekend a couple years back. Was a bit of an ordeal getting it home thanks to a badly wired up glow plug setup and a faulty fuel sending gauge but we made it.
Car has had a very hard life. Spent time as a beach rig as well and has some rust in the tub, A pillars, firewall and rear of cab. Was just happy to get something with an SR5 interior in grey and having the tub with a usable floor was a bonus as these are getting very hard to come by.
Car started life white with a 4Y petrol. At some point it has been swapped to a 2L Diesel from a surf which was pretty tired.
This is a frame off restoration project. As more things are pulled apart there are more issues cropping up. The doors were held on with roof bolts, brakes had 3 different size bolts holding on calipers, lot of bog, redone sealant in cab to cover up rust, bodged up electrics etc.
At time of writing this, replacement 3L engine has been cleaned up and has had a TD04 turbo installed. Chassis has been cleaned up and painted. Cab and tub are still undergoing rust repairs.
Modifications
Engine and turbo being replaced. OME shocks and springs with 2 inch lift.
Have sourced some movie accurate parts such as original smittybilt front/rear/rollbar, 5x7 KC fog lights, door mirrors, KC 6 inch daylighter lights for rollbar, US wheel rims and centre caps, Goodyear wrangler tyres.
Also upgrading stereo, few interior parts using SSR-X Surf interior.
