History
My first car was my first automotive love........I washed and vacuumed and pampered this car every weekend years before I would actually own it. My parents never had to clean this car.
My parents came across this car as a repossessed vehicle, collected by an uncle that was in the business at the time.
It was the right price in the right place and it was a Holden :) My parents sold their HG Premier 253 sedan just prior.....
The HZ had been a beast of burden of sorts, owned by a couple from Tasmania that had been towing a tri-axle caravan around Australia for God knows how long, the severely stretched tow bar was testament to the cars' torture.
As in the picture, this is how it was presented to us, with cow catcher aluminium bull-bar, it also had huge 14x8" ROH Wildfire mags that curiously had cast on the back that they were not intended for road use?? Always wondered if they were a drag strip special or race wheel? The tyres were 245 rear and 235 front Bridgestone Steel Belted 60’s......how cool were they?
The HZ had about 150000km on the odo from memory and was driven everywhere by my family....Expo '88 trip to Brisbane from Mildura being the furthest when petrol was 35 cent/litre in Queensland!!!
I learnt to drive in this car, massive tyres, non power-steer and a heavy clutch. I always did most of the driving when we went away, on my L's through whichever city we were in, I loved it.
The HZ was mostly a standard car except for the GTS "SLE" steering wheel and the low towing diff (3.45) which resulted in 350km to a 60L tank!! The dual 2.25 inch exhaust sounded great I remember.
God I miss this car.....
Modifications
First thing I modified on my HZ was to change the diff to a 3.08 ratio out of a Statesman which meant I could get over 400km per talk of fuel.
The bull-bar was given to Dad for his ute when I found a mint front bar for $50 from a guy in Whyalla :)
