18,886 ZG Fairlane’s were manufactured between 1973 and 1976. Of those only 5,010 were fitted with the Australian built 351 Cleveland V8. Sadly many of the 351 Fairlanes were stripped of their drivetrain, running gear and 9 inch diff through the 1980’s/90’s when a ZG Fairlanes like this one could be purchased for next to nothing.
Although a small number were fitted with the straight six, the majority were fitted with the 302ci Cleveland that developed 240bhp (180kw) and 414nm of torque. The 351ci Cleveland developed 260bhp (195kw) but its torque was significantly higher at 481nm.
This vehicle was originally bought by Mr K. Osland (Toronto NSW) in June 1974. It was his third new Fairlane having previously owned a 1968 ZB and a 1971 ZD. Mr Osland purchased the car fully optioned as his personal vehicle. He drove it for 18 months but suffered a stroke rendering him unable to drive. The car was the garaged for 14 years during which time he regularly started the car. In 1990 his son John acquired the vehicle and used it as his personal vehicle. The car was regularly maintained and in 1997 it was converted to dual fuel (LPG/Petrol).
Since acquiring the vehicle in 2017 I have had RWC repairs carried out, installed a new GT style twin exhaust system with ceramic coated extractors, installed an Edelbrock 4V manifold together with a 670 Holley Avenger carburettor and installed a recurved Bosch Electronic ignition system. The LP gas system has been removed, many electrical issues resolved, the cluster lens replaced and numerous other minor items attend to topped off with an Edelbrock Air-cleaner. These works have really made this Fairlane come alive and it is a pleasure to drive.
Like all classic cars there are always things that could be done and these include some minor rust repair, repaint one of the side mirrors, install period correct steering wheel, clock, bumper over-riders and radio cassette. I have all of these parts, some of them being very rare.
According to Ford Australia production details this ZG Fairlane is unique as it is the only one of its kind ever made with the 351 engine and the above options.
