History
My first car, purchased in 1961 when I was just 17 years of age was a green 1952 Hillman Minx. 1250cc side-valve engine, 4 speed gearbox. Apart from the usual running around town, my mates and I used to regularly go on shooting trips around the South West of WA in the car. I had fitted lap belts to the front, which came in handy one day when we misjudged a corner, and rolled the car (gently) on a gravel road. It was driveable, but needed a new body, with the mechanicals being OK.
We located another car, black this time, with worn-out engine etc., and spent the next two weekends stripping both cars, and transferring the running gear into the black body!
This lasted another couple of years, and I made several "upgrades" to the Minx, including added instrumentation. With a ready supply of spares, I also mounted the fuel tank from the green car into the boot, behind the back seat, with an electric fuel pump which transferred petrol to the main tank. Highly illegal now, of course, but it worked!
Eventually, around my 20th birthday, I traded the old beast for a 1959 Sunbeam Rapier, which seemed to be more effective in attracting girls in those days!
