WA delivered to the owner of a trucking fleet with lots of MB trucks. I bought it in 1998, sold it in 2000, bought it back in 2006, still got it.
Modifications
16" wheels so I can get suitable tyres more easily, vents in bonnet to help reduce under-bonnet temperature, battery moved to boot as they don't seem to last long in the under-bonnet heat.
I bought a demo one in 1976. Light car and very fast out on the open road once you had rpm in it but the wide space four speed gear box limited it there. A clear step in power at about 2,500 rpm (no tachometer in the dash). Living in remote SA at the time non sealed roads had the rear suspension almost fall out with bolts loose and front end bent beyond adjustment. Very hot car even with air conditioner and rear window shade. Negative scrub steering made it very tiring driving long distance as any road camber or cross wind meant you had to concentrate all the time. Great zoom zoom sealed road car but way to light for local condition. I had to traded it after nine months and go back to another 504 that lasted another 13 years.
Hi JB007, yes the Passat was a bit noisy and lightweight, but quietened right down at a bit above highway speed. A fifth gear would have been nice. Fantastic visibility out of those big windows. And oh so sporty after my Hillman Hunter! Upon reflection, I think it actually was a 1976.
