History
I bought my first vehicle sight unseen as it was owned by our local mechanic and trusted family friend. It was an Australian assembled 1962 Peugeot 403B sedan that had 71,000 miles up. Dad drove it home two weeks before my 18th birthday but I could only drive it in the back yard, wash and polish it, until I got my drivers license and could then insure it. A frustrating and very long two weeks! To make it worse, my 18th birthday was a Sunday so had to wait until 9am the Monday morning to go for my license test at the local Police station. This was the start of my love of Peugeots and I still own two of them (have had 24 in total over the years). I had this 403 for 2 1/2 years and traded up to a 404 when I could afford it.
The 403 was a fabulous car and very suitable for a new young driver, not too fast but handled beautifully. Due to the 15" wheels it had very large drum brakes and very safe. Lovely interior and very comfortable.
Modifications
Mechanically it was standard but I added some slightly wider rims from a 404 with Michelan X steel belted radials. Probably the best tyres available in the late '60s.
