Launched in 1989 the fourth generation Z car from Nissan represented a return to form for the marque that kicked off a sports car revolution years earlier.
Nissan referred to the new Type Z32 300ZX as Project 901, a designation that stood for “1990” and “number-one sports car” as it was designed to be a technology showcase to beat the world’s best sports car of its time like the Porsche 928 and Corvette C4. A seriously forward thinking car for its day and the hero car for Nissan throughout the 1990’s that had Porsche second guessing its position within the segment. The 1990 Nissan 300ZX appeared at dealers on April 24, 1989.
The 300ZX also served as the halo car for Nissan, the way the GT-R does for the Japanese Automaker today and when released here in Australia in 1990 it cost an eye-watering $87,000.00.
With looks like a product of the unrealized future previewed by the best sci-fi flicks of the 1980’s, a naturally aspirated and rev happy 3.0 litre V6 producing 222hp, a revolutionary variable cam timing system smoothing out power delivery, lift-out roof panels for open-air motoring, profound structural rigidity and a sexy tweed-clad, driver centric cockpit layout with tautly accurate controls the 300ZX is one heck of a car to own and drive.
The time-warp car offered is an Australian delivered 300ZX in its original Aztec Red over Grey Tweed trim, sold new by Grand Nissan, South Australia on the 21st of December 1990 and has travelled just 88,000 kilometres.
In totally original, unmodified condition this refreshing sports classic is one of one and still features its factory fitted cruise control, electronic windows, radio cassette stereo, digital clock, air-conditioning, and roof shades with matching targa top stowage bags.
Stepping through the rock solid door apertures is like being transported right back in to 1990 when the car was brand new. The hardwearing Tweed trim that wraps around the dash, to the door cards and matches the seats is in absolute pristine order, the switch gear with white text across the dash multi-function steering wheel and arm rests looks as though it’s never been used, the leather steering wheel is in mint condition and there is still that distinctive new car smell in the air.
The same goes for the exterior. Red is a notorious colour for showing its wrinkles and age but a life lived indoors means this car shows zero signs of age with no dents at all and shining glossy paint. The panel fit and finish is to characteristic Japanese precision, the original alloys are in mint condition including the never used spare tyre and tools, the impossible to find and original “Nissan” decal is still fitted to the front bar, the original chrome quad-pipe exhaust is still shining and even the original “certified by Nissan” is still on the quarter window. It also has the 3 original Nissan keys with matching numbers including the titanium key.
Accompanying this archetypal collector’s edition 300ZX are its original manuals bound within the vinyl Nissan wallet including owner’s manual, service booklet with delivery information, original sales brochure, as all of the original 300ZX stamped keys. All tell-tale signs of a cherished car; a credit to the last custodians and an asset to the next.
Driving this unrivalled 300ZX is totally engaging from the raspy exhaust note, punchy top-off acceleration and is at the top of enthusiasts and collectors ‘bucket list’, not just for its elegant styling, but also mainly because of its 3 litre V6 engine, a very sophisticated design and construction. As one knows from Nissan, the quality of the car is in another league, and this flagship model is known for its luxury, whilst maintaining very respectable performance figures.
Driving this car is a pleasure, being a factory 5 speed manual putting it into gear seamless, and the car pulls away smoothly. Running through the gears beautifully, it again fits into that ultimate open-touring driving experience.
