History
I built this bike over a 7 year period. I love the XR750 grass tracker Harley and found Harley built 1700 XR1000 bikes in 1983/4 but only put out 62 hp and looked like a sportster. The engine was tuned by Branch flow metrics who got it up to a decent 115hp and won the Santa Monica race in its first outing against the then Ducati’s which were dominating the Battle of the Twins series. That bike was named ‘Lucifers Hammer’ and ran concistent speeds over 154mph. To give some perspective, the top Japanese bike was the Kawasaki GPZ900R which put out 95hp and was considered a rocket in its day. I used an XLX 1984 chassis and built everything from scratch by either making or altering components from available in 1984 or earlier.
Modifications
I am a mechanical engineer and qualified in my late thirties after being a bike mechanic working in tuning shops since aged 17, I did all the work on this bike myself.
The specs are: XR1000 engine, Branch flow metrics flowed and ported heads, high compression pistons, original HD XR race cams, 40mm race flat slide carburettors, balanced and lightened crank, performance adjustable electronic ignition, Screaming Eagle race exhaust pipes…..etc. I loved building it in my shed and have photographic sequence of build including me die grinding the inner crankcase si as to allow me to get the clearance I needed for the high lift camshafts. The bike is registered and perfectly road rideable and unlike any other Harley you will find on the road today.
