History
For me this very car is where my love for cars all started. My Monaro was originally built in Sydney with a 202ci motor, trimatic gearbox & banjo differential. From Sydney the Monaro was freighted up to Lochart Motors in Southport Queensland where it was sold to Florida Swimming Pools, Chevron Island in Surfers Paradise on 15th of October 1971, it was to be used as a company car for the 1st few years of its life.
Not sure of the date Florida Swimming Pools sold or traded the car but the Monaro was purchased for my parents Bill & Charmaghine Perkins By My Uncle Mike Steggall of Mike Steggall Motors from Egars Holden at Newstead in Brisbane on the 14th of October 1975 & was then taken to its new home north of Brisbane in Strathpine.
The Monaro then saw the duties of bringing myself home from hospital after my birth in April 1976, the birth of my brother in October 1977 & the birth of my sister in July 1980. It was then full time family car for the Monaro, taking myself & my brother to footy & my sister to netball & all three of us kids to swimming, from there the Monaro's tasks went on with my farther teaching me & my brother how to drive.
After me & my brother acquired our licences, the Monaro was written off in an accident when I was driving in January 1994 due to bad road conditions, this prompted the 1st rebuild of the Monaro.
The Monaro was brought back home to Strathpine where it was stripped back to its bare bones. We replaced the damaged walk off front chassis & panels but the original drive train made way for a 308 V8, M21 4 speed gearbox & a Salisbury differential. Once completed the Monaro was reregistered in Febuary1995.
For 3 years myself my brother & my farther enjoyed driving the Monaro between the Gold Coast, Willowbank & the Sunshine Coast until I decided to take the Monaro off the road June - July 1998 For its 2nd rebuild.Once again the Monaro was stripped back to its bare bones.
Over the next 12 years while having to navigate my way through a series of incidents, every thing under the bonnet was detailed to the Monaro of my dreams. The drive train was handed to my brother for another Monaro project we were doing & I purchased a 350 chevy, turbo 350 automatic gearbox & custom built differential. The body didn't require any attention as it was still good from the 1st build.
On my birthday in April 2010 the Monaro was back on the road.
Over the next 7 years with a couple of minor changes here & there the Monaro is pretty much in the same form to this very day. Although the old girl is starting to show its age with that old paint it can still turn a few heads when I get it out on the road.
Now Planning rebuild number 3.
To be continued.
