History
My car was purchased new by the Chairman of Cabinet Industries, London W1 in November 1970 and was delivered with the registration ELY 27J, the same registration it has in NSW today. He traded it in for for an Interceptor Mark 3 in 1973 and my car was purchased by an Australian living in the UK who imported it into Australia in 1974.
It was delivered new with four options being a Voxson 8 Track stereo, Sundym tinted glass, town and country horns, and a black painted roof - it was the only white Mark 2 delivered with a black roof.
It was owned by a senior executive of Bob Jane T Mart in Melbourne for some time who painted the roof Bob Jane blue! In 1987 it was acquired by a Sydney owner who carried out a progressive enhancement program with the initial intention of racing it in the Targa Tasmania. He had the engine, gearbox, and diff rebuilt, the front seats releathered, and a partial rechrome and respray including painting the roof white. He did everything to perfection so when he put the car up for sale in 2001 and I saw it I knew it was the one I wanted.
Over the last eleven years I have had the front suspension and brakes fully rebuilt, and a part rechrome and full respray. Over Easter 2011 my wife and I took it to Kangaroo Island via Broken Hill, Silverton and Menindee for the Jensen Nationals, and it lapped up the outback roads however also lapped up a fair bit of petrol too but you only live once!.
For a 1970 car it is very well specified with standard power rack and pinion steering, four wheel power disc brakes, integrated climate control air-conditioning, electric aerial, electric windows, limited slip diff and great performance with the soundtrack to match! I have added remote central locking, central locking becoming standard on the 1971 model.
The car is as original as possible with three exceptions, being the white roof, a Kenwood CD player, and Minilite wheels. Mark 2's originally came with Rostyle wheels however the chrome pitted badly with the salty roads in the UK so it was fitted with Globe Bathhurst alloys in Melbourne. The owner I bought the car from fitted the Minlite wheels. They look great, are still obtainable, and are of the right period so they are staying on!
A very usable daily classic and a headturner to boot.
Modifications
The engine has been gently warmed with a Stage 1 cam, extractors, a Holley 725CFM carby, electronic ignition, the auto box upgraded with a shift kit, and the exhaust is a full twin pipe 2.5 inch stainless steel system. It certainly goes harder and louder than a standard car!
