History
The Original Holden SS.
HQ was the first time GM/Holden used the model designation 'SS' in Australia, released in 1972 the limited production run of just 1500 sold out in about 1 week resulting in dealers taking orders they couldn't fill and most customers not getting to select their preferred colour or options,so under-prepared were Holden for the sales success they actually ran out of the Houndstooth trim, this resulted in some first batch cars having a black interior. A somewhat forced second run of 1300 took no longer to sell out either - having only built a total of 2800 they are now sought after by those who understand the history the HQ SS.
Holden's 'Monaro' had always been a 2 door coupe, but at the Sydney Motor Show in August of 1972 they released a 4 door V8 sports sedan which was essentially a 4 door Monaro (albeit based on the more basic Belmont), all cars were fitted with a 253ci (4.2L) V8, M20 4 Speed and 3.36 final drive through a 10 bolt Salisbury - the headline figures pale in comparison by today's standards, 185 horses, 0-100 in 9-10 seconds and a seventeen second Quarter mile.
Available in three unique colours with very 70's names such as -'Infra Red', 'Ultra violet' (purple) and 'Lettuce Alone'(lime green) it was distinctive, the interior came with bucket seats trimmed in Houndstooth with a Monaro dash and steering wheel. Exterior Mods such as black out grille and headlights, Fluted Guards, Rallye Wheels and a specific decal kit gave it a unique presence.
The SS was marketed as an affordable "Sport Sedan" at just $3,500 on the road, this proved to be successful and based on this success - Holden released a 4 door Monaro in 1973.
In my experience the 'SS' is not nearly as well known as its GTS cousin, most people don't know about the 'SS' and I'm constantly asked questions about its history or what it is (Not even Shannon's club TV acknowledged its existence during their HQ episode). Most people call it a Monaro, a few years ago I had an enthusiast ask if the car was something I had created i.e. customised a HQ to tie it in with other, more well known Holden products! interesting fact - he was a member of an SS owners club. Whether people do or don't know what it is doesn't really matter, its just great to see there is still enthusiasm for all classics.
My Quey was built in the first run and in 45 years I'm just the third owner - fortunately each owner has given her a good home. She feels, sounds and drives beautifully. Rarity,an interesting history, gorgeous looks and character add to the desirability. All in all it makes me feel fortunate to be the custodian of one of Holden's legacies.
