History
Purchased on the shores of Lake Burley Griffin during a carshow, Canberra, in 2007, when my husband was away fishing.
It took about 5 years to work through worn out stuff, replacing a never ending line of parts like starter motor(s), fuel pump, clutch and accelerator cables, regulators etc. Converted to 12V, which needed new generator with mounts and all the globes etc. Also had a few dents fixed.
I've fitted all the body bits like visors, mirrors and bumper over-riders and rails. Making the roof rack and rear louver, refurbishing the interior, and fiddling with wires was an interesting exercise - often ending in a love-hate relationship! I've spent many hours in, under and around the car, which will always need ongoing maintenance - running boards and engine/gearbox mounts next!
I love my old Beetle and hitting the highway, where I can cruise at 60-65mph, always brings a smile to my face. Oh, the odd tow truck experience cements many friendships with like-minded rescuers and mechanics.
What would I change? I should have waited until a more original car had come along, although it would no doubt still have needed new bits and I would not now have a very personalised bug. And, my mechanic and I are the best of friends, even if he still says "don't-a-touch-a-de-car!!" after I attempt to fix something mechanical :)
