History
The Mercedes-Benz 500SLC was created to homologate the SLC for use in the World Rally Championship. It was made as a lightweight coupe, with aluminium bonnet, bootlid, bumper supports and rear control arms, as well as a powerful 5 litre V8 alloy engine. They were actually raced with an automatic transmission.
The 500SLC is actually the rarest post WWII Mercedes-Benz, rarer in fact than the vaunted W198 300SL Gullwing, with less than 1200 produced.
It was only made in LHD, and obviously never released in Australia.
There are two examples of the 500SLC in Australia, and this is one of them.
There is also one 450SLC 5.0 in Australia. The 450SLC 5.0 was the earlier version off the SLC rallye coupe, and was very similar, but differed in having a slightly larger displacement (it was slightly over 5000cc, but the rules for 1980 stipulated that the displacement needed to be below 5000cc) and only a 3 speed transmission.
This example is finished in Mercedes black, with a black leather interior, and was originally delivered to it's first owner in Luxembourg, before making it's way to the later in the 1990's, before eventually coming to Australia in 2009.
