History
Purely by chance, 11 years ago when I needed a car, a fastidious uncle was selling his dark metallic green (Sherbrooke) VS Berlina Ecomoo. I'd not have bought a Commodore, I was looking for a Volvo 940 as the most likely purchase. But the Berlina was in such good nick we couldn't pass it up for the price.
Fast forward 10 years, and it'd been a really reliable good car, it had cost almost nothing in maintenance & repairs, and while giving it it's first country run in 2 years it started making nasty engine noises driving down from Robertson to Kiama. There was nowhere to pull over & stop for what seemed like hours (probably only 5-10 minutes) ... but by the time I did, the engine was too damaged. Yeah we fitted a used engine to get us by, but that was about the time we decided we were going to think about getting a newer car. And the Commodore had just been a ridiculously good car.
So being a car enthusiast, I decided I wanted to get one of the last local V8's. I've never owned a V8, and after next year I won't be able to buy a new Australian one at all. I was a bit surprised, but the better half enthusiastically agreed, except she wanted a wagon for it's utility. Luckily, Holden still make a V8 wagon ...
Browsing through the website & pricing cars, we decided we wanted "the same colour", and we also wanted the Redline. So a Regal Peacock Redline Sportwagon it would be. So we started looking; only to discover the colour we wanted was discontinued in the Redline trim! The only option was going to be existing stock, and after a few hours looking through the stock listing of every single Holden dealer in South Australia, NSW, Victoria & Queensland, I found one that was only a couple of hour's drive from home.
Yeah ... it had some vinyl. But that was fixable.
So, yeah, it's only a new Commodore, anyone can get one. But we actually had to hunt for ours, so it actually feels a bit more personal.
