Race Report
Australian Karting Championships Round 3 – Newcastle NSW- KA2
After what can only be described as a disastrous round 2 at Albury, the championship moved to Newcastle, a track Emerson really likes and some describe as the hardest track in the country.
Qualifying; As always qualifying would be close, Emerson made a great start putting down some fast laps, on lap 5 of 8 Emerson went to P1, only to drop to 8th which was ok, given the top 10 drivers were covered by .332 of a second.
Heat 1; Emerson made a really great start moving into 5th but at the fastest part of the track he copped a slight tap putting him in the tyres at about 90kph, a fair bit of damage to be repaired & Emerson was thinking oh no, not again.
Heat 2; What seemed like a pretty good start by all drivers soon turned nasty at the infamous turn 2, basically the mid pack didn’t see an incident up ahead causing a massive pile up, a bit like the Monash at peak hour. Of course Emerson had to cop it, again a fair bit of damage but at least Emo was able to finish, albeit in 18th.
Heat 3;This time the mechanics got caught out with the set up, the officials didn’t run heat 3 on Saturday due to time constraints, so we ran first up Sunday morning and to be fair we hadn’t run at this time all year. So Emerson knowing the kart wasn’t great decided to save his tyres for heat 4 & the final, 18th again.
Heat 4; Starting out of P21 for heat 4 was always going to be a challenge but Emerson was pumped & ready to go, what happened next can only be described as a stunning drive. Making his way from 21 to finish in position 8 passing 13 karts along the way.
Final; Excited with the pace of the Shannons rocket and starting out of P17, once again Emerson grabbed the race by the horns, every lap he was passing karts. Another great drive coming home 7th, that’s 23 karts passed in 2 heats & matching the leaders pace.
All we have to do is have a clean Saturday and a podium is surely there for the taking. Off to Emerald in FNQ for Rd 4, bring it on.
