This is the Lyell - Dent Special . Constructed using rails from a Model T Ford . It was fitted with an Austin Seven engine originally. It was used extensively up Foley's Hill and Rob Roy . It went to South Australia where it was extensively raced at Mallala and the Collinggrove Hill Climb at Angaston . It has been passed around by a number of well known motoring identities notwithstanding its ownership for a period by Garrie Cooper who modified the vehicle to his specs . In particular he handmade and fitted a beam axle to the from whilst moving back the position of the radiator motor etc . Hydraulic brakes were fitted earlier in the piece from a Morris but later replaced again . I once owned this car and remember driving it back to Conmurra ave in Edwardstown in Adelaide, as a schoolboy . Cooper was pleased to revisit it and gave me an Elfin badge to fit onto the bonnet ! . The car survives and although not currently together it remains a fascinating piece of our early 'specials ' history albeit fairly outpaced these days . Its underslung chassis and good looks remain ! I hold an extensive library on this little car including very early images of it going up Foley's Hill driven by the original owner , a roadtest done by a sporting magazine and much of its ownership history .
