History
A mate purchased a old VW and replaced its motor with a 1500cc from a Type 3 VW station wagon back about 1973. Having the cooling fan at the back of the motor entailed chopping the back of the body off.... or Baja'd it.... I liked the look of that and thought I'd do the same.... but better.... :) Bought a motor first.... Then a VW.... chopped it up... motor fitted..... went well.... wide rims... never got around to a paint job.... lots of trips and reliable... Went to some off-road racing... The then Baker Brothers were winning the races in their VW powered buggies.... thought I'd get the motor 'done up' by them.... They talked me into the standard cooling system as the rear fan type didn't cool as efficiently... They put a big bore kit on it.... took it to 1750cc.... A Weber 40DCN carby was fitted... mild cam grind.... oil pump cover and journals modified to take a external oil filter.... non vacuum advance distributor.... and a front Baja fiberglass kit I fitted myself..... She went real well.... lots of trips.... lived in Vic, Tassy and NSW with it.... reliable.... though I only had hose clamp oil lines and they popped off once.... converted it too 4 wheel disc brakes. Lots of money spent.... but never the time or place to work on it and get it to the stage I wanted... Traded it in for a Pajero SWB NA in 1983.... :(
